Grasshopper
Pilates Downtown was opened in September 2003 by professionally
certified Pilates instructor Gina Papalia. Located at 116 Franklin
Street near West Broadway in Tribeca, Grasshopper is a fully equipped
classical studio that includes three reformers, four wall units, 2
wunder chairs, a high chair, cadillac, pedi pole and a ladder barrel.
The studio has been designed with a clean, simple modern sensibility
that enhances the old-fashioned charm of a traditional high ceiling
Tribeca loft space. Airy and light-filled, the ambience at Grasshopper
Pilates Downtown is warm, gracious and welcoming.
Equally warm and gracious is owner Gina
Papalia who began teaching in downtown New York in 1996. Papalia
embraces each client individually and unconditionally, balancing a
serious approach with a fun-filled and friendly attitude. Her intention;
to stay true to the traditional tenets of the Pilates Method and to
closely follow the logical learning process as originally conceived by
founder Joseph Pilates. Papalia, a professionally trained dancer, is
particularly knowledgeable about the anatomy and musculature of the
human body. She knows precisely how the body works, how to learn to use
it most efficiently -- and how to make Pilates a pleasurable learning
experience that's simple, thorough and effective.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise method based on the work of Joseph Pilates. Its
focus is on
strengthening the "powerhouse" (abs, buttocks, and inner thighs) to
execute the
exercises which are designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility
and improve
posture. Pilates will lengthen and strengthen your muscles with-out the
bulk. The
method involves concentration and the coordination of movement and
breath,
thereby helping to balance mind and body.
Why the name "grasshopper"?
The
"grasshopper" is a very challenging exercise in pilates that
embraces all its fundamental principals; breathing, centering, control,
concentration and fluidity
