“You can say what Pilates is in five words. Stretch with Strength and Control. The control part is the most important because it makes you use your mind.”

FAQs

  • Pilates is an exercise method based on the work of Joseph Pilates. Its focus is on strengthening the "powerhouse" (abs, buttocks, and inner thighs) to execute the exercises which are designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, improve posture, and stabilize the core and back. Pilates will lengthen and strengthen your muscles with-out the bulk. The method involves concentration and the coordination of movement and breath, thereby helping to balance mind and body.

  • The "grasshopper" is a very challenging exercise in Pilates that embraces all its fundamental principals; breathing, centering, control, concentration and fluidity.

  • We suggest you start with a few private sessions. We want you to be familiar with your body's strengths, needs and work correctly from the beginning. We introduce you to the philosophy of pilates, terminology, and the different apparatuses. There is a lot of information that you need to focus on in the beginning, to create a strong platform for your success in training. Some people stay with privates who like and need the one on one attention. Others move into duets and semi privates with the permission of their instructor.

  • Pilates is an excellent way to rehabilitate and recover from a chronic pain or a recurring injury. The Pilates method works the body as a whole, while focusing on balancing the weaknesses. Most injuries are from incorrect body alignment over time that become an injury or a chronic problem.

  • Pilates can be safe and effective way of preparing you for your upcoming surgery, with permission of your doctor and in the hands of the right instructor. Yes, you can do Pilates if you have had a knee/hip/shoulder replacement, as long as you have been cleared by your doctor and completed PT. (As always, you should know your restrictions for your own body.)

  • No, all the teachers at Grasshopper Pilates work together and have all been trained under a Classical Pilates Certification. You can learn so much from having different teachers.

  • Clothing that's comfortable and not too loose. Socks are required, you do NOT need shoes. We suggest that if you wear loose shorts, you wear bike shorts underneath.
